Flame Test Lab
Purpose
The purpose of this lab was to experiment with different chemicals that mixed with methanol like Copper Sulfate and Borax, then lit it on fire to see what reaction we would get.
Procedure
First, we had to put on protective lab wear. Then, we had to get a certain amount of chemicals on a watch glass and fill the glass with 5 dropper fulls of methanol. We repeated that process for all chemicals.
Pre Lab Questions
1. What color of light has is the lowest in energy?
Red
2. What color of light has the highest energy?
Violet
3.What color of light has the highest frequency?
Violet
4. What color of light has the lowest frequency
Red
5. How are electrons excited?
When they are promoted to a higher energy cell by absorbing photons.
6. What does it mean when electrons are excited?
They receive more energy by absorbing photons and heat.

Post Lab Questions
1. Why do you think the chemicals have to be heated in the flame first before the colored light is emitted?
The chemicals have to be lit on fire so the electrons can become excited and react to the chemicals.
2. Most salts contain a metal and a non-metal. What kind of bond is formed between a metal and a non-metal?
An Ionic
3. What is the definition of a salt in chemistry?
Ionic compounds that result from the neutralization reaction between an acid and a base.
4. What is fire?
When substances combine with oxygen in the air to emit a hot light.
5. What are the c
